Who I work with
I work with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and larger organisations throughout the UK, Ireland, Poland, Czech Republic and China. Being fond of overseas travel I’m always interested in hearing from foreign clients so do please contact me if you are reading this website outside the UK and you think you might be able to use my services. Most of my work is with ‘for profit’ organisations, however, I occasionally work for ‘not for profit’ organisations and my clients include The Richmond Fellowship, The National Trust, The GCA, and The HTA. Predominantly my work is with organisations in the ornamental horticultural sector, working with businesses in the following sectors: –
Plant Production Nurseries
Typically my work with nurseries focuses on growing sales, bringing new products to market, improving marketing processes and driving profitability by increasing gross margin.
Garden Centres and Retail Nurseries
This sector accounts for at least a third of my time and typically I am asked to provide staff training in a variety of areas including ‘how to increase the average sale’, ‘how to deliver great customer service’, ‘merchandising techniques’, ‘supervisory skills’, and buying and negotiation skills’. As we all know garden centre cafes and restaurants have become an integral part of moist garden centres and over the years I have frequently assisted garden centre owners in improving the profitability of the catering offer. This might be through margin analysis, menu engineering or training staff to upsell.
Accounting for about twenty percent of my client base landscapers use me to identify the real costs of landscape works, margin analysis, manpower analysis and how to drive sales and achieve higher prices. I have developed several business model templates that have proved to be highly successful in driving growth for my clients.
Occasionally I will work with companies that manufacture garden products, be it growing media or fertiliser. Typically this work involves either developing market entry strategies or at a practical level facilitating bespoke sales trips to potential customers in the UK.
